Print Exhibition for Turning up the Heat: Diaspora food cultures and climate change co-research project

Four Quadrants of the Sky 四大神獸 by Eelyn Lee exhibited at Bloc Projects, Sheffield

I co-created and performed a mythical character The Navigator for Eelyn Lee's year-long collaborative project that 'newly constellates diasporic identity and becoming' for East and Southeast Asians in the UK. The exhibition includes Eelyn's film and the costumes we co-designed with Christine Ting-Huan 挺歡 Urquhart during character development. (September 19, 2024 → October 14, 2024)

ITP Camp at NYU New York City

I joined ITP Camp for June 2024! Not quite a residency but a long period of peer learning based at the ITP/IMA programme facilities at the NYU Jay Street campus. After moving away from 7 months working as a data engineer, I was happy to be in a creative space experimenting with different technologies, playing with a mix of soft- and hardwares with intro sessions to media forms across audio, visual and tactile, like e-textiles. Each day was marked with faculty and peer-led workshops, often giving tasters into a digtial tool or method, which Campers used towards general learning or a project. Towards the end of the month I spent some extra time on digital embroidery and showed my small piece at the Show ALL Things Show. (June 3, 2024 → June 27, 2024)

Waterscapes on Land video exhibited at 'Storm Warning: what does climate change mean for coastal communities?' at Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Penzance

Waterscapes On Land (2023) is also on view in Cornwall. The Storm Warning exhibition is a collaborative two venue project in partnership with Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Penzance, which seeks to raise awareness of the impact of the climate crisis on coastal communities in South Essex and Cornwall. Waterscapes on Land video exhibited at 'Storm Warning: what does climate change mean for coastal communities?' at the Big Screen outside Southend-on-Sea public library and Focal Point Gallery

Waterscapes On Land (2023) is my two-part project that is newly commissioned by Focal Point Gallery (Southend-on-Sea, UK), in partnership with the Catchment to Coast project. Led by Southend City Council, it is one of 25 projects within the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP). (September 30, 2023 → January 6, 2024)

Eelyn Lee's 'Hong Kong Future Diaspora' Exibition at Bloc Projects, Sheffield

The exhibition shows Eelyn Lee's work-in-progress of her project 'Hong Kong Future Diaspora', which invites me and other collaborator through a 'process of devising a series of contemporary mythical characters Centring embodiment, conversation and improvisation, the group has created worlds and characters that forge a speculative ‘Hong Kong-ness.’' While I did not make it to perform during the live performance/ritual to bless the opening of the exhibition, choreographer Jan-Ming Lee took my place for my character The Navigator, and with our rehearsed movements. Rain Paradox (2021) Exhibited in Uncertain Data at FACT in Liverpool

To culminate my year-long Jerwood Arts FACT Digital Fellowship, my artwork Rain Paradox (2021) - consisting of a video in collaboration with residents across the UK and a four-part illustrated banner collection - is exhibited at FACT Liverpool. The project gathers research around climate narratives about water scarity in the UK, and I present how official and local climate framings differently influence our public views of climate change. [Export Explode> Artwork Exhibited at Wat Tyler Country Park for Estuary 2021 and Metal Culture

[Export_Explode> is a video essay that identifies the unfinished histories of Britain’s explosives manufacturing, from their use in industrial and imperial expansions worldwide since the late 19th century, to their active legacies in contemporary extractivism and conflict. It was exhibited on the existing Explosives Trail onsite at the former Pitsea Explosives Factory on the Thames Estuary as part of Estuary 2021 for Metal Culture. (May 21, 2021 → June 12, 2021)

I was commissioned by Alice dos Reis to write an accompanying text for their solo exhibition at Trixie in The Hague. Resonating with the themes of finding belonging, learning about and through other species, and feeling the spaciousness that exists in, between and beyond the Earth's various landscapes, I wrote a speculative fiction, with humour, from the perspectives of the krill that the protagonist bioengineer experiments on, in Alice's own sf narrative in their film that was on exhibition. My text was exhibitied on Trixie's exterior window for pedestrian viewing. (April 2, 2021 → April 25, 2021)

[Export_Explode> Artwork Commission for Metal Culture and Estuary 2021 at Wat Tyler Country Park

I was commissioned by Metal Culture to create an artwork that responds to the sites for Estuary 2021 (originally Estuary 2020, postponed due to the pandemic). During the artwork commission, I researched into former Pitsea Explosives Factory on the Thames Estuary. It produced munitions at the height of the Industrial Revolution, and is at the site of Wat Tyler Country Park, which is now an RSPB bird watching nature reserve. I created a video essay highlighting this history and the contradictions of the histories of extraction and of the British Empire alongside contemporary access to nature, all considering a climate justice approach. My story 'w the worm', published for The Institute of Queer Ecology (IQECO)'s Towards A Common Survival compilation of 33 creative contributions, was exhibited at Gas Gallery in Los Angeles as a wall print. The project was initiated in light of the increasingly difficult political spaces for justice work, bringing together multimedia, hopeful artworks to reframe collectivity alongside survival.
